All The Basics You Need To Know About M2M SIM Cards
What is M2M?
M2M is an abbreviation of machine to machine. It refers to the direct exchange of information between two devices, using a wired or wireless communication channel without the need of human intervention. It is the foundation of the Internet of Things (IoT). And allows for the automation of virtually any process. It has found application in a broad range of sectors, from manufacturing to healthcare. M2M provides a way to improve productivity and eliminate imprecision without accruing significant extra costs.
What is an M2M SIM?
In short, an M2M SIM facilitates all of the above. Just like a standard mobile phone SIM enables the transfer of voice and SMS communication, an M2M SIM expedites the transfer of data. The M2M SIM can be inserted or embedded into a device, which is then configured with the organisation’s server. From there, you can monitor your data and manage all of your SIMS. There are different management platforms available, but you should be able to set data caps and alerts to prevent you from overusing data and overspending.
What’s the difference between standard phone SIM cards and M2M SIM cards?
Consumer SIM cards are typically used to store the information that is required to connect a handheld device to cellular networks – your phone number, network settings, carrier settings. They can perform many of the functions of the M2M SIM and can be used for IoT devices. But they may not withstand the conditions you require them to.
M2M SIMS generally have a greater storage capacity than standard phone SIMS. They’re usually more secure. And they have a longer lifecycle – most can retain data between 10 to 17 years.
Some M2M SIMs are also more robust than others. Those tailored for the automotive and industrial environment, for example, are created to cope with extreme temperatures, ranging from -40°C to 105°C. They also have a stronger build, so they’re better able to withstand mechanical processes, equipment tremors and the rigors of the harshest working locales. A consumer SIM would not continue to function in those circumstances.
How secure are M2M SIMS?
SIM security depends on your provider. Some provide a private APN (Access Point Name) accessed through a VPN (Virtual Private Network). This ensures that you have a secure tunnel for data transfer and prevents any unauthorised data access. Lower budget M2M SIMS usually connect to the open internet, which means that security could be an issue. Be sure to check before committing to any deal.
When would you use an M2M SIM?
Machine to Machine communication is used for a variety of functions including but not limited to:
- Remote monitoring – stock checking and auto-replenishment
- System automation
- Payments and invoicing
- Security
- E-health and telemedicine
- Logistics and vehicle tracking
- Robotics
- Manufacturing
- Smart home tech
- Telecoms
That’s just the start or the M2M potential. And M2M SIMS can be used for all of these sectors and processes.
M2M SIMS are basically a tool to aid the productivity of your business. They can be employed in a variety of ways and a series of devices. If you’re looking for a secure, robust way to automate processes within your organisation and store a high capacity of data, M2M SIMs should be a serious consideration.
