Our Client


Our client, DnaNudge Ltd, provides a genetic testing service that guides you to make the best shopping choices based on your unique genetic makeup. The service is a world-first consumer genetic test that can be performed on-the-spot, meaning you do not have to send your DNA sample away to a laboratory and eliminates the long waiting times that come with undergoing genetic tests. The process involves providing a DNA swab in the form of a cheek swab. The swab is loaded in the DnaCartridge which then analyses certain genetic traits regarding nutrition metabolism. Your genetic results are then loaded onto your phone and through the DnaNudge App personalised nutrition recommendations are made. The DnaNudge service analyses and maps users’ genetic profile to key nutrition-related health traits such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension and cholesterol, enabling customers to be guided by their DNA towards healthier eating.

 

When the Covid-19 pandemic began, DnaNudge quickly identified they could contribute to the reliable testing requirements the government was now struggling to achieve. 

The in-store DNA testing service created to address the epidemic of obesity and Type 2 diabetes was successfully adapted for the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. DnaNudge developed a rapid, lab-free CovidNudge RT-PCR test. CovidNudge can accurately detect COVID-19 and other viruses in just over an hour, without the need for a laboratory, and is now in UK NHS roll-out.

 

CovidNudge is one of the first rapid, lab free Covid-19 tests providing results at the point of care. The tests have been subject to academic review and found to be 94.4% effective at identifying those with Covid-19, and 100% effective at identifying those without Covid-19 (according to Reuters). The UK Government commissioned DnaNudge to install their solution within NHS UK hospitals across the UK.

 

A&E, Maternity and Surgery Departments need a quick turn around time for test results. This really helps so that they can move and assign patients to the correct wards and departments, and provide the correct care. CovidNudge is also very safe, once the sample has gone into the cartridge it is all sealed with no risk of contamination or spread. It all operates at room temperature so no need for temperature control or monitoring. By bringing the accuracy of a lab test, with a quick result turnaround, to the onsite locations it is most needed, the different departments are able to seamlessly build Covid testing into their procedures and improve the speed and level of care that is provided.

 

The CovidNudge boxes were originally designed to work with local broadband connections at each hospital in order for the devices to communicate the data with DnaNudge software and activate the communication of results to the hospital or via SMS to the patient.

The Challenge


DnaNudge Ltd, contacted us requesting assistance with evolving the connectivity for their CovidNudge product. They had identified that hospital broadband was often slow and unreliable, and it was difficult to get the right support within the hospital when network adjustments were required. 

 

They were looking for a reliable solution that gave them full control over the CovidNudge devices they were commissioned to install in multiple locations across the UK. Not only did the connectivity need to be remotely managed, but also a router was required that had the ability to be remotely managed also. The solution needed to have good connectivity in any location in the UK, with back-up redundancy so that it was ensured that tests could always be processed. The solution also needed to be as low cost as possible, from the very beginning of this project DnaNudge communicated their commitment to saving money for the UK government when creating this solution.

 

DnaNudge did not know how long the project was going to run for, and so did not want to commit to any term for connectivity provided. The solution needed to be on a short contract term commitment. They also were unsure of the data requirements, with this completely dependent on the number of tests processed. 

 

When the project was first presented to us, DnaNudge were quick to identify that data usage would be difficult to predict. The enquiry was targeted towards high data usage from the beginning, but quickly changed to an unlimited data allowance.

The Solution


We identified that the wireless connectivity must access all UK networks, ensuring connectivity in any location; but multinetwork data comes with a higher price. The customer had specified that they required high data usage per SIM and preferred an unlimited option. Unlimited data is not yet available for multinetwork SIMs, and if it were it would be expensive. We did not want to compromise the connectivity quality and committed to identifying a solution that would be able to access all UK networks. 

 

We identified single networks that had good coverage across most of the UK and the best deals available on the market for an unlimited data allowance on a short contract term. We chose a single network that was the best option based on pricing and coverage and provided discounted pricing for short contract terms. This would be the primary SIM for the solution.

 

With the primary SIM taking most of the strain, we could provide a multinet secondary SIM accessing all UK networks with a lower data allowance aggregated across all SIMs. This would provide a cost-effective solution for areas that did not have good coverage with the single network and provide backup redundancy. We proposed a lower data aggregated tariff creating a large total data pot for the first order of 500 devices. Again, we provided discounted pricing for short contract terms.

 

Our online management portal allowed for both the Multinet and Singlenet SIMs to be included on the same platform. Through this platform the customer could activate, bar, unbar, cease, and view usage for each of their SIMs. This provides full management ability over their SIM estate at their own convenience 24/7.

 

The final element of the solution is the router. After looking at the market, we identified a router model that was a good fit for connection quality due to their “Smart Roaming” capabilities and provided the dual SIM device required. Again, we provided discounted pricing and were able to produce a cost saving for the customer.

 

The chosen router model provided an enhanced router management platform, giving the customer all the remote management functionality required. 

 

We created and pre-loaded a custom configuration for these routers which monitors signal and connectivity of the SIMs. If no connectivity is achieved through the Singlenet SIM, the router autonomously switches to the Multinet eSIM. If signal is then re-established on the Singlenet SIM, the router autonomously switches back. The APN settings were also preloaded using this configuration. This ensured that the router would always achieve connectivity using the SIMs provided, with no interaction required from the customer.

 

BetterM2M designed a robust multinet solution, meeting and in some cases exceeding the client’s expectations.


Our proposal was unique in that it provided a multinet solution, on short contract terms, with autonomous connectivity management at a competitive price. This is not something that is readily available on the market.

The important thing BetterM2M has helped with is the connectivity. To get Wifi in the hospitals is not that easy. When we developed this machine, we thought that getting the Wifi would be easy, we didn’t think this was going to be a problem. Hospitals have their own security and IT infrastructure, so to get Wifi working in the hospital 24/7 has been a challenge. 

 

At the beginning we wanted a router that could give us the full access to manage the router, changing the access, monitoring which device is connected and the usage. We have found that the router platform also provided a location service which we did not expect to benefit from when we first enquired with BetterM2M. We can see the location history, and which network provider the router is connected to.

 

BetterM2M guided us to the purchase of a very nice router, and we can monitor the usage and have notifications. Also, the smart SIM cards that can cover different network providers is great. The Singlenet SIM is good too, it is unlimited so we can control the usage. 

 

All of the great features in the product are helping us, and the department of health is very appreciative too. The security and stability of the service is very important in the hospital, they can’t have any downtime and the process needs to be monitored. It’s great, BetterM2M have provided us with this support. It’s really great that we have worked together to help with this pandemic.
